Diabetic Research Study Information
The Wharton Medical Clinic, in collaboration with the University of British Columbia and the Canadian Centre for Functional Medicine, is now recruiting volunteers for a study to investigate the effect of adding fibre supplementation to a medically supervised weight management program.
What is required if you want to volunteer:
- As part of our study, we will ask participants to consume meal replacements and one of two dietary fibre supplements, as part of a low calorie diet for 1 year
- We will ask participants to attend 12 study visits over a period of 1 year
- We will collect small samples of blood, etc. to measure various health parameters
- Body weight and blood pressure will be collected during the study
- Participants will be asked to complete some questionnaires and logs during the study.
Individuals who qualify for the study:
- 18 – 75 years old
- Living with Type 2 Diabetes
- Overweight or Obese
Individuals who do NOT qualify and are NOT eligible to participate in the study include:
- Women who are pregnant, breast feeding or plan to become pregnant.
- Individuals who currently smoke
- Individuals with a diagnosed eating disorder like anorexia and bulimia
- Individuals with allergies to dairy, whey, rice, soy and or coconut
- Individuals who have difficulty swallowing
- Individuals who have had bariatric surgery
If you would like to participate, what do you have to do now?
- If you are interested in participating in the research study, we need to determine if you qualify. This will involve answering our online screening questionnaire and submitting the responses online.
- These questions are about your current and past medical and health status.
- There is a possibility that some of the questions may make you uncomfortable or distressed. You don’t have to answer those questions if you don’t want to. You can leave them blank.
- Any information that you provide, including your name and any other identifying information, will be kept strictly confidential and is secure on our website.
Remember, your participation is voluntary and you do not have to complete these questions.
